Serving Others

Kindness and Compassion Changes Lives

Come and Serve Others with Us

There are many stewardship opportunities at St. John's to serve others in our congregation and our community.   New ministries are starting up each year.  Here is a video that provides a brief overview of the many opportunities to serve others. Come and join us in serving others.

Open Hands Food Pantry and Garden

Open Hands Food Pantry and Garden began as a ministry of St. John's.  It is now an independent 501(c)3.  Many in the St. John's community volunteer and support Open Hands which is the largest food pantry in Oakland County.

New to You Shop

The New To You Shop provides low cost clothing and household items to raise money for community outreach. Proceeds from the shop are allocated to various outreach programs and charities within the church as well as the greater community. The New To You Shop has been operating out of St. John’s Episcopal Church (11 and Woodward) since 1980. We accept donations daily and consignment items by appointment.

Social Justice Group

The Social Justice Group seeks to serve our community through identifying issues of concern, researching and organizing for change.  Our work may take the form of service projects, mobilizing events for awareness or broad based community organizing with other groups in the region. We begin with listening and building relationships with one another with the goal of healing, reconciliation and justice all.

The Bee Ministry nurtures and cares for the St. John's hives in the Bride's Garden.  This ministry is an outward sign of our parish commitment to be stewards of God's creation. Our bees pollinate our plants and flowers including the Open Hands Garden and the gardens of our neighbors. This is a developing ministry.

Blessing Bags

Blessing Bags are created for our homeless friends and contain soap, shampoo, toothpaste, lotion and blessings from St. John's. They are available in the Narthex or West Transept.  Please take one or two to offer those in need.

You can donate items or help make the bags.

Coffee with a Cause

Coffee with a Cause is a new ministry formed to support non-profits and the wider St. John's community such as Open Hands, New to You, and the Oakland Literacy Council.  Volunteers work for 1/2 hour and share coffee and fellowship for 1/2 hour. There is no standing or heavy lifting required.  Meetings are 3rd Tuesday of the month.

Grounds Committee

The Grounds Committee works one Saturday a month to keep our grounds beautiful.  The work includes keeping the gardens weeded; adding soil, compost, and mulch, planted annuals and perennials and so very much more to keep our grounds looking well cared for.

The HoneyDoers do the odd jobs that do not always get done.   If sparkling windows make you swoon?  Does vacuuming bring you joy?  Help out the St. John's staff and enjoy socializing.   This group meets at 10:30 am on the 4th Tuesday of the month.
